The Perth Mint of Australia is well known for producing silver bullion coins with stunning depictions of some of Australia’s deadliest creatures. Among the collection of intriguing coins from the Perth Mint is the Australian Silver Funnel-Web Spider coin.
Australia has more than 40 species of funnel-web spiders, which is considered one of the world’s deadliest spiders, both in terms of clinical cases and toxicity of it’s venom. The funnel-web has fangs longer than some snakes, and they are powerful enough to bite through a human toenail.
The obverse of the coin features the Ian-Rank Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the words “Elizabeth II Australia 1 Dollar” and the artist’s initials.
The reverse features an overhead view of a funnel-web spider with it’s long legs, hairy body and large fangs. It is surrounded by the words “Australian Funnel-Web Spider 2015 1 oz 999 Silver” and the traditional Perth Mint “P” mintmark.
