Considered by many to be North America’s most beautiful waterfowl, the Wood Duck is a well-loved resident of southern Canada throughout the warm summer months. This unique duck nests in tree cavities, living primarily on vegetation in and near waterways and wetlands.
The reverse design by Canadian artist Trevor Tennant features a Wood Duck breeding pair in glorious full colour. The male, positioned in the foreground, is viewed from the left and behind, his crested head turned in profile to the right. Poised on a tree branch, his bright red eye peers across his blue-black iridescent back and folded wings. The portrait shows the white outline pattern on the male’s head to lovely effect. In the background, the female is viewed from her right side. Poised on a fallen tree trunk, her characteristic white-rimmed eye markings, indigo bill, and chestnut brown breast and flank are beautifully complemented by her aubergine wing feathers.
